Are you and your pet prepared in the case of an emergency?

When we think of emergencies like a house fire, or evacuating for a hurricane we have a plan ourselves, but do you have one for your pet? Yes, taking your pet is always part 1 of the plan but do you have a part 2? Are you ready to leave home with your pet for days if needed? Here are some things to think about in preparation for your fuzzy buddy in case of emergencies.

Create a “to-go” kit for your pet including the following items:

  • Food and water bowls – collapsible kinds are great; you can save room in your kit and do not have to worry about them cracking or breaking.

  • Food & Water; at least 1 weeks’ worth – it’s important to keep these fresh, an easy way to do so is by changing out the food/water in your kit when you purchase your pet's food – frequency depending on food type/brands expiration date.

  • Pet treats & toys

  • Leah & collar/harness

  • Pet carrier for small animals

  • Waste bags / Pee pads or newspaper / Small bag of litter and little box – if you have an animal like a cat or rabbit that uses litter it’s important to remember they may not go to the bathroom outside in an emergency and holding it and lead to health problems (that last thing you are going to want to worry about during this time.) You can find collapsible and pop up litter boxes online, or you can use a clean box to pack your to-go kit in. (Portable Litter Box on Amazon)

  • A copy of your pet’s medical records, vet information, pet’s insurance information, and microchip information.

  • Your pet’s medication

  • An information card with your pet’s name, gender, age, breed

  • First aid kit for your pet

  • Towel/blanket

  • Your contact and emergency contact information for your pet

  • A hard photocopy of your pet

Have a “housing” plan, know which shelter or friend/family you will call if you are unable to take your animal with you. Find pet-friendly places to stay in advance so you are not scrambling to find one when the time comes. At https://www.petswelcome.com/pet-friendly-hotels you can search by city or state to get a list of pet-friendly hotels and their policies.

Do not forget to make sure your pet sitter is aware of your emergency procedures in case something was to happen while you are away.

Be financially prepared, some people may keep extra cash in their emergency pet kit, others may have small savings account set aside for their furry friends, you also may want to look into pet insurance.

We treat our pets like family, because they are family. Make sure all your family members are prepared in case of an emergency. Share your pet’s emergency plan with everyone your home and a close friend. Make sure to refresh your to-go kit as needed, stay safe, and be prepared!

Additional Note: a good thing to have on your windows/back door - rescue our pet stickers you can order custom ones online or easy to fill out ones like the ones found here.
